How to calculate the value of an Aeroplan point

A simple method is to compare the cash price of the ticket with the total cost in points and the amount that still needs to be paid in cash.

(cash ticket price − taxes and fees paid in cash on the reward) ÷ number of points used

Suppose a ticket costs $900 in cash.

A comparable reward requires:

• 55,000 Aeroplan points;
• $80 in taxes and fees paid in cash.

This calculation is not perfect. Ideally, compare genuinely equivalent tickets: same dates, same cabin, similar conditions and the same baggage assumptions where possible.

Why Aeroplan value can vary so much

One Aeroplan point can produce modest value on one booking and much more on another.

When Aeroplan can be especially attractive

Aeroplan can be compelling when:

• the cash price of a flight is high relative to the points required;
• useful partner availability exists;
• you have flexibility around dates;
• you are using points for a trip you already intended to take;
• you can compare several itineraries before booking.

The program can also appeal to travellers who value access to a large network of airline partners.

When it can make sense to keep your points

It may be reasonable not to redeem immediately when the available value is poor and you have a realistic travel objective in the near or medium term that could produce a better use.

However, holding points indefinitely also carries risk.

Programs can change reward charts, partners and rules.

Do Aeroplan points expire?
