Credit cards and Costco in Canada: what you need to know

Costco changes the rules: a limited accepted network in the warehouse, purchases rarely classified as groceries, big baskets. If a large share of your spending goes there, your card strategy has to account for it.

Costco is not a grocery store like the others

For many households, the Costco warehouse absorbs a large share of the budget: food, gas, pharmacy, household items. For a credit card, though, these purchases have three particularities:

  • the accepted network is limited: in the warehouse, Costco Canada only accepts Mastercard credit cards, along with debit and the other payment methods it publishes;
  • purchases are generally not classified as groceries by the payment networks, which neutralizes most boosted “grocery” rates;
  • baskets are large and infrequent, which quickly reaches some monthly caps.

A strategy that ignores these three points can seriously overestimate what a card will earn.

The network: Mastercard in the warehouse

A Visa or American Express card, however good, is no use at the warehouse checkout. If Costco weighs in your spending, your strategy therefore needs at least one Mastercard, preferably one whose base rate, or a rate specific to Costco purchases, is decent. Online payment terms on Costco.ca can differ from the warehouse; since these rules belong to Costco and can change, always check its current conditions.

This is why Carte IQ asks, in the personalized analysis, whether you shop at Costco and how much you spend there. That information serves two purposes: making sure the strategy includes a card accepted in the warehouse, and assigning Costco spending to the card that rewards it best, rather than to a grocery-strong card that would earn nothing there.

The category: why the “grocery” rate does not apply

Issuers apply their boosted rates according to the merchant category assigned by the payment network, and warehouse clubs have their own. As a result, a grocery card’s headline rate usually does not apply at Costco, and those purchases earn at the base rate.

A few cards explicitly provide a rate for Costco purchases. When that is documented, Carte IQ applies it to your Costco spending; otherwise it applies the base rate, without assuming otherwise. The guide Which credit card for groceries? explains the logic of merchant categories.

Costco gas

Costco gas stations are a case apart: they often fall under the “gas” category rather than the warehouse-club category, but that classification depends on the networks and can vary. Here too, only the rates documented for each card are applied by Carte IQ; when the information is uncertain, the guide and the engine both stay cautious.

One card for Costco, another for the rest?

A common strategy uses a Mastercard for the warehouse and another card, stronger on classic groceries or restaurants, elsewhere. It only makes sense if the net gain justifies managing two cards and fees do not cancel the advantage. Carte IQ applies its responsible complexity policy: the second card is only recommended if it brings enough annual net gain. See One credit card or several: which strategy earns the most?.

What the Costco ranking shows

The best cards for Costco purchases ranking presents the top choice for a reference spending scenario, honouring warehouse acceptance. If your Costco spending is very different from that scenario, or if you already hold cards, Find my strategy recalculates the result with your amounts. Each card’s current rates and fees are on its card page, with the date of the data.

Frequently asked questions

Which credit cards are accepted at Costco in Canada?

In the warehouse, Costco Canada only accepts Mastercard credit cards, along with debit cards and the other payment methods it publishes. Online payment conditions can differ; always check Costco’s current terms.

Do my Costco purchases count as groceries for my card?

Generally not. Warehouse clubs are classified under another merchant category, and boosted “grocery” rates usually do not apply. Some cards, however, provide a specific rate for Costco purchases; each card’s page says so.

How do I tell Carte IQ that I shop at Costco?

The personalized analysis includes a Costco spending category and an “I shop at Costco” preference. The engine uses them for warehouse acceptance and for allocating your spending.
