American Express in Canada: where it is accepted and when it is worth it

American Express cards often top rewards rankings, but they do not work everywhere. The right question is not “Amex or no Amex”, it is “Amex with what”.

Acceptance, the real topic

Visa and Mastercard are accepted almost everywhere a credit card is in Canada. American Express is accepted by most large retailers, restaurant chains and online merchants, but not everywhere: some grocers, many small businesses, convenience stores and warehouse clubs do not take it. Costco, in particular, does not accept American Express in its warehouses.

This reality does not make American Express cards bad. It simply changes how to use them: as the main card where they are accepted, with a Visa or Mastercard for the rest. That is also the rule Carte IQ applies.

Why Carte IQ requires a backup card

When a strategy keeps an American Express card, Carte IQ always adds a Visa or Mastercard, and the result states which card plays that backup role. Two reasons:

  • a strategy that does not work at the checkout of an everyday merchant is not a usable strategy;
  • a no-fee backup card costs little and avoids paying in cash or by debit, with no rewards, for spending that could have earned some.

That backup is not a gimmick: its assigned spending and its value are calculated like any other card’s. See One credit card or several: which strategy earns the most?.

When an American Express card is worth it

Canadian American Express cards often stand out with high boosted rates on some everyday categories, transferable points programs and substantial welcome bonuses. They are worth it when three conditions are met:

  1. Your dominant categories are the ones where the card is strong, and the merchants where you spend accept it.
  2. You will actually use the rewards, for example a points program you know how to redeem. The guide American Express Membership Rewards: how much are your points worth? explains American Express’s in-house program.
  3. The annual fee is covered by the rewards and credits you will use, calculated on your spending.

Otherwise, a good Visa or Mastercard, accepted everywhere, often earns as much with less to manage.

Including or excluding Amex in rankings

Every Carte IQ ranking page exists in two versions: with or without American Express. On the Top 3 for your province, a filter excludes Amex; in a personalized analysis, the “avoid American Express” preference is passed as is to the calculation. In both cases the no-Amex strategy is calculated from scratch, which can change the top choice, not just second place.

Amex welcome bonuses and timing

American Express welcome offers change regularly. Carte IQ shows for each card the confirmed current offer, its verification date and, when verified history allows it, how it compares with earlier offers. An offer clearly weaker than those observed in the past can justify waiting. The guide Are credit card welcome bonuses worth it? explains how to read this information without feeling rushed.

In practice

  • Note the five or six merchants where you spend the most and check whether they accept American Express.
  • If they do, compare the net value after fees of an “Amex + backup” strategy with that of a single Visa or Mastercard; Carte IQ calculates both.
  • If they do not, exclude American Express and compare the rest; the ranking is just as rigorous.

Each American Express card’s current fees, rates and offers are on its Carte IQ card page, with the date of the data.

Frequently asked questions

Is American Express accepted at grocery stores in Canada?

At many large chains, yes, but not all; some grocers, convenience stores, small businesses and warehouse clubs do not take it. The simplest approach is to check the stores where you spend most often.

Can I hold only an American Express card?

You can, but you will run into merchants that refuse it. Carte IQ never recommends an American Express card alone: a Visa or Mastercard backup is always part of the strategy.

How do I exclude American Express from Carte IQ results?

Public pages offer an “exclude American Express” filter, and the personalized analysis has the same option. In both cases the no-Amex strategy is calculated separately, not obtained by removing a card afterwards.
